Just a comment that both of these sayings are from the old days in the silk trade, before the introduction of mechanization the cocoons were dropped into boiling water to kill the pupae, and then they were unwound by hand.
If you let the thread hang slack at any point, the very fine strand would 'bunch up' and tangle - you had to keep just the right amount of constant tension on the strand of silk.
Likewise, as the thread stretched out further and further, if you paused and started again, the sudden difference in tension would likely break the strand.
